Insurance and payment

Does NRG Clinictake insurance?

No. NRG Clinic is cash pay. We accept HSA and FSA cards and give you a superbill with every invoice. Here is why, and what it costs.

  • No membership fees
  • HSA/FSA accepted
  • Superbill with every invoice

The short answer

No. NRG Clinic does not accept or bill insurance. We are a cash-pay clinic. You pay for your labs, your medication and your visits directly, there is no membership fee, and you can use an HSA or FSA card. Every invoice comes with an itemized superbill you can submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement.

Why we do not bill insurance

Insurance plans put limits on hormone care that most of our patients do not want.

  • Copays and deductibles. Many plans apply hormone therapy to a deductible, so you pay full price anyway until the deductible is met, and then a copay on every visit and prescription.
  • Prior authorization. Most plans require your provider to prove medical necessity before they will cover testosterone or hormone therapy, usually with specific lab values and paperwork, and then review it again at renewal. That adds weeks and can end in a denial.
  • Limits on what can be prescribed. Insurance formularies typically cover a short list of products and doses. Compounded medications, creams, troches and combinations are usually excluded, so your provider's choices are made by the plan, not by your labs and how you feel.
  • Limits on labs. Plans decide which tests they will pay for and how often. Our panels are broader than most plans cover.

Paying directly means your provider chooses the medication, the dose and the labs for you, and you know the price before you pay it.

What it costs

Labs start at $79 for men and $89 for women, with the first provider consultation included. Most TRT patients pay $100 a month or less for medication, and women's HRT averages $125 a month. Shipping is included. The full price lists are in How much does TRT cost at NRG Clinic? and How much does women's HRT cost at NRG Clinic?.

HSA and FSA cards

Yes. We accept Health Savings Account and Flexible Spending Account cards at checkout. Use the card like any other debit or credit card. Plans vary in what they cover; if you are unsure, check with your plan administrator.

Superbills for reimbursement

A superbill is an itemized receipt with the diagnosis and procedure codes your insurer needs. One comes with every NRG Clinic invoice. If your plan has out-of-network benefits, you submit the superbill to your insurer and they decide what, if anything, to reimburse. We cannot tell you in advance what your plan will pay, and some plans exclude hormone therapy. Your plan's customer service line can tell you whether out-of-network hormone care is covered and what your out-of-network deductible is.

Can I use my insurance for the blood work?

Our lab panels are ordered and paid through NRG Clinic at Labcorp, and the first consultation is included in that price. If you already have recent blood work from your own doctor, you can send it to us and we will tell you whether it covers what your provider needs. See Can I use my own labs? on the FAQ page.
